Mahala is a director, video journalist, and producer based in Brooklyn. She works at Courageous Studio, CNN and Great Big Story’s branded content production studio, directing films for clients such as Coors Light, Hulu, Merck, Volvo, Charles Schwab, and more. In 2018 she was honored with a Best of the Best in Directing at the New York Brand Film Festival for a short film she made with Princess Cruise Lines about Swedish Executive Chef KC Wallberg.  Before transitioning to film production in 2016, Mahala was a staff video journalist and photographer at the Denver Post. During that time she was honored with several National Edward R. Murrow awards, Heartland Chapter Emmy's for her daily work covering the news of Denver, and an international News and Documentary Emmy Nomination for a Denver Post documentary she produced on the rising numbers of homeless school children in Colorado following the recession. Mahala was a member of the 2013 Denver Post staff awarded with the Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Reporting for their coverage of the Aurora Theater Shooting. 

Mahala is especially proud of her work with writer Jennifer Brown in bringing a series of articles and short documentary videos to publication about being transgender in Colorado in 2015.

Mahala is a graduate of the photojournalism program at the Newhouse School of Communications at Syracuse University.
